February Ornament Fail!!!.

well, 2 months into my little project of stitching an ornament a month and i’m already behind!.

my excuses are = i choose the wrong pattern to stitch in the first place, and more importantly, the fabric and i are not getting on one little bit!. its 30ct linen and i am finding it really hard to stitch, even with my glasses!. i’ve had to get out the magnifying glass on more than one occasion to check the stitches are where they are meant to be!.

anyway, this is how much i’ve done…..

I’m going to work on the top of the tree today.

and just to show how much i am struggling with this, this is the first picture i showed 2 wks ago!.

i have 2 ideas in mind for this piece – finish it as per the pattern, or just do the tree and not the snow and scrolls at the bottom and finish it as a tree shaped ornament. i may end up stitching 2 ornaments in march to make up for this hiccup!.

I’m heading away down to the lakes of central Otago tomorrow or monday and taking the neighbourhood with me, because its my plan to finish that by the end of March.

happiness through the post!.

a couple of weeks ago i commented on a blog i follow who was having a give away for reaching 500 posts. i won that giveaway!. i never win anything so was super chuffed!.

pop over to Stitching under the southern cross and she her adorable baby girl choosing the name from the bowl!.

today my prize arrived and i’m completely blown away by it. 2 charts by my favourite designers, one of which i’d been umming and arhing about!. and some cute embellishments for my paper crafting.

thank you so much Rowyn, i’m very touched by your gift.

Jan Project Life spread

i have finally committed my Jan Project Life page to its page protectors. all in all it took me about 2 hours to complete because i realised my photos weren’t 6×4 and 3×4 so i had to find cards for them to sit on.

i’m going to have to search for another photography programme that will help with the sizing. my go to template produced these, and the software that came with the printer doesnt seem to offer an option for those sizes!.

so this is the spread…..

i have preserved the privacy of all those photographed!.

my process worked all – i had the diary to refer to for things that happened through January, and i just drew a template in my notebook to help plan where to put everything. i didnt have to leave many things out, so one spread per month is about right for me at the moment.

i’m quite happy with the spread and now that i’m looking at it, i may not actually worry about the photo sizes – having them mounted looks ok.

in other crafty news – my fab xmas ornament is making slow progress, but should be stitched by the end of the month!. no more crochet completed yet, but now that the rugby season has started here, that may be my evening craft of choice!.

hope you’re all having fun making things!.

cross stitch update

while i was in Australia, i didnt do as much stitching as i had hoped i’d do. i’d set myself the goal of finishing the right hand third, plus the house in the centre.

however due to the heat and the lack of a suitable well lit place to sit i found it hard going at times. but i did try to get an hour in most days just to progress the piece along, cos i want to start my next big piece!!.

so, this is where we left off before i went to OZ…..

and this is where i’m at as of today. i managed to finished the right hand third of the panel, and begin the house in OZ, and have continued to work on the house since getting back. there’s test cricket to watch which is helping my productivity!.

a close up of the squirrel holding a carrot – very cute!.

now is also the time to be thinking about my Feb ornament of the month, and while i have a few charts to choose from now, i went with a kit i brought when i went to the Quilt and Stitch show here in Christchurch on friday. now that i’ve started it, i think it might be too big to be considered an ornament, so i may have to still stitch another one. i’ll decide once this is finished. i hope to have it finished this week, which shouldnt be hard given there are no colour changes!.

a couple of weeks ago while still in OZ, i decided to try an order from again. my first try got stuck in Canada and was in doubt of ever getting to me. the store communicated well with me at that time and in the end the order did arrive in London. so i decided to see how long it would take to get to NZ. about 10 days is the answer!. i placed an order for some more xmas ornaments as i cant seem to find alot on websites down in this part of the world.

the next 3 photos show my new charts.

the Prairie Schooler never really appeal to me on paper, but when ever i see them stitched, they are gorgeous, so i got 2 booklets with lots of options!.

more LHN, which i adore. i’m desperate to do Sleigh Bells, but i have to wait for the LNS to relocate to a new premises. i saw them at the show on friday and i know they carry all the major speciality threads that LHN and CNN seem to use, so once they have moved i’ll be in with long list!.

this is a Homespun Elegance chart and i just love the sleigh in the sky.

so there we have it, up to date and plenty of options for me to drool over!.

back home again.

i am now back home in NZ after a great 2 1/2wks in Australia, where i saw my niece start school. she loves it and wants to be first to the classroom each morning!. long may that enthusiasm continue.

i didn’t do a lot of sightseeing, choosing to enjoy the swimming pool and doing a little shopping.

i spent my time on the Gold Coast of Australia. as i was taking this shot, a bird was flying towards me. i thought it was a seagull and think to much more, until i thought it was too big to be a seagull!. by the time i realised it was a pelican, it was too late to get my camera ready. thankfully it landed above me on a lamppost, so i was able to photograph it.

where i spent a good chunk of every day. my niece and i had lots of fun playing, as well as me just floating in the sunshine. i managed to get a bit of a tan!.

the main reason for me visit. this is the morning of the first day with my niece having a final cuddle with her beloved dog Lucy before heading off.

we spent a great afternoon at a creative store, where we all painted items.

this is what i was working on. the final product is further down.

i really liked this art installation at Brisbane airport.

i went to IKEA and brought 4 of these dishes – they are glass bottomed and freezer and microwave safe. i’m intending to stop using plastic for food storage once i’m in my own space. while these have plastic lids, i can ultimately i will get rid of the lids and use tinfoil.

i was checking out the DVD store for something for my dad when i spied this – i loved series one in the UK but saw about 2 episodes of series 2, so brought it, and decided cos of the deal, i’d get series one as well, that way if my friends want to borrow it that can start at the beginning.

more from IKEA = i spied this duvet and pillow set in London and really wanted it but knew i had no room left in the suitcase so left it. when my sister said she wanted to go shopping there it was the first thing on my wishlist!

also from IKEA – 2 baking mats to reduce the need for baking paper.

opposite IKEA is a fabric store, so we popped in. i brought 2 lenghts of fabric only, it could have been much worse!.

as mentioned in my previous post, my vintage treasures from the local car boot sale.

late last year i participate in a swap and in the end my gift was sent to my sister, so i finally got to see what i got. included were these gorgeous salt and pepper shakers and pelican tea towel.

the final result of my creative afternoon. i need to get some more orange paint because it got a bit close to some still wet navy paint on the journey home.

my sister took me to the Kaisercraft store. i had to go lightly!!. i ended up with this organiser,

santas sleigh,

and some bits and pieces for Project Life.

from a stationary store, i thought these would be fun for PL as well.

a weekly planner that sticks to the fridge.

aboriginal art fabric purse. love the colours in this.

and finally some books. i’d been good until i got the the airport bookshop!. i brought 2 books during my stay and 3 at the airport!. i read ‘Firestorm’ in 24hrs, i just loved it.

so now its time to crack on with Project Life spreads.

stay tuned!.

Queensland car boot sale!

Continuing my new tradition of finding flea markets/car boot sales/charity stores for unique treasures from my travels, my sister and I went to the local car boot sale in her Gold Coast suburb.

it was a decent size gathering, but very little of the types of things I’d look for. That would be vintage items!. I found one stall and brought 3 items from her. She knocked $3 off the total as well!.

i got 2 small glass jugs, combining my love of jugs and glass in one item = bonus, and a metal scoop that had no signs of rust. Nice small objects that will fit in the suitcase easily ( along with the Ikea goodies and Kaisercraft bits and pieces!)

I’ll be sharing with the folks joining up with the Op Shop Show Off once that goes live and I can figure out how to do the links on my iPad. If this post goes wonky it’s cos I haven’t done it on the iPad before!

one more week of this…..

…….then it’s back home to NZ.
