the Goals for 2015!.

Standard

well, I’m finally ready to commit goals to paper, so to speak!. so here goes –

Personally –

continue staying debt free; generate some income whilst caring for my mother; continue to keep sugar out, or to a minimum, of my diet; walk everyday; read more books (modify list going round pinterest – more on that later) – all from my bookshelf or library; participate in ‘A Novel Idea’ by Going Reno ; continue to source vintage and second items for the future nest.

Crafty –

complete 6 Christmas cross stitch ornaments; finish the snowmen by end of June; have half of the hexagon blanket complete by the end of the year; work on my artwork with a view to selling via etsy; catch up and keep up with Project Life monthly spreads.

Self Reliance –

continue to sow seeds successionally and learn the art of vege growing here; learn to process the cooking tomatoes that are currently forming; work on bread and dough making skills; research homemade deodorant more to try and solve problems thrown up by last years experiment; continue to research and learn about my dream lifestyle of off grid living.

this list doesnt seem as comprehensive as last year, but with 2 big ideas for this year, its probably not a bad thing!. I’ve carried a novel idea around in my head for the last 2yrs or so, so I’m going to try really hard at following the program set at ‘going reno’, and see if I cant have a first draft novel by the end of the 6mths. and I need to generate some income and think my art can holds its own compared to others on etsy, so I’m going to give it a go!.

exciting year…..lets go……

2014 in review

Standard

with 3 days left of 2014 I thought I would look back at the list of goals I made back at the beginning of the year. this is a copy of what I posted, followed by my review of each group.

JAN 2014 – personally –

*stay debt free; move into own space ( get own cat or 3!!!); continue to reduce sugar in diet; up the exercise level (from basic to a little bit more than basic!); get a job!; source vintage and second hand items for my home; read more books; see more movies; be a tourist in my own city.

DEC 2014 review – I am still debt free!. I haven’t moved out of my parents home as I need to be handy to deal with my mother. I have kept up with the low to no sugar, except for Dec, and I haven’t really enjoyed what I’ve eaten, including (shock horror!!!) Quality Street choccies!. upping the exercise is a fail – I started to walk but gave up quickly due to weather or commitments and havent got back to it!. my mother is my job currently!. I have had a nosey round second hand shops once in a while and picked up a few things to feather my future nest!. I’ve managed to read a few books during the down time – I dont have a tally however. with wanting to conserve my money I havent seen many movies at the cinema, but try and catch up with a few on sky movies. tonight I’m going to watch ‘Frozen’ for the first time, making me quite possibly the last person on the planet to see it for the first time!.

JAN 2014 – crafty –

* finish the neighbourhood by the end of March; stitch an xmas ornament each month; start and finish the snowmen; do a Project Life spread each month; crochet something to keep the stitches in my head!.

DEC 2014 review – I did get the neighbourhood finished by the end of March and absolutely love it. on the Christmas ornament a month front = epic fail!. I think I stitched the grand total of 2 and a half!. one of those I gave to my niece for Christmas. I have started the snowman, but not finished them!. I’m way behind, like 6 months behind, on Project Life. I made good progress on hexis for new blanket.

 JAN 2014 – self reliance –
* continue to work on vegetable production – get to grips with NZ planting seasons!; look into home made products – for now, shampoo, toothpaste; continue to cook from scratch; investigate eating/buying locally; reduce reliance on electrical goods if there is a hand powered option available; remove plastics from my surrounds( will need to wait til in own space most likely)
DEC 2014 review – I’m in full swing of the summer vege growing season at present and seem to be getting to grips with what you do when. the only homemade product I made and used was deodorant, and currently, I’m not using it because when the weather warmed up I was noticing a rancid smell by the end of the day. I need to investigate why or try some different recipes as I’m not prepared to use it like that. I did add extra tea tree oil but it didn’t help. I have switched to an Eco Store shampoo and soap for now. cooking from scratch is ticking over nicely, but other than farm free range eggs from friends, I’m not doing alot of eating or buying locally. I will choose NZ grown over overseas products however. reducing reliance on electricity is something that really only happens in the kitchen for now – hand beating over an electric beater for example. as a family we managed to not use the clothes dryer at all over the winter. I keep the no plastics in the back of my mind when I’m shopping for house hold items, but its only small things for now.
so, there you have it – not too many epic fails, lots of small steps and a couple of successes!.
I’ll be back with a post or two on plans for 2015!.

Welcome 2014

so!, here we are, another new year!. i don’t do resolutions as such, but i do have a few goals for myself this year. if i set them out here maybe i might stick to them!.

geez!, that looks a lot!. might have to remove a few things!!.

it’s cold!

Standard

Yesterday for about 5 minutes it snowed here in north London!. i should have left last week, not next week!. i have no winter woollies, other than my cozy alpaca shawl i brought in Geneva. i’d sent my winter clothing home back in May when i left my flat, thinking i’d be there by now!!.

not having any of my woollen clothing here has really brought it home to me how much warmth they provide. i’m freezing when i go out – the wind is rattling my skeleton!.

i already bore people about the benefits of 100% woollen clothing, but i reckon its going to get worse now i’ve experienced this weather without wool!.

i remember when i trained and first worked as a nanny in NZ, we always used woollen vests in the winter. the baby wore a cotton vest first, then a woollen one over the top, then the rest of their clothing. i really believe we need to bring wool back into children’s clothing as so many children are getting ill, from being cold. and, have woolly blankets on beds. all this cheap cotton and man made material items are not providing the warmth that’s required.

even though i already have a pile of woollen blankets waiting for me in NZ, i think i will crochet another one next year as part of my projects for the year. or maybe a shawl, as i love this alpaca one. decisions decisions!.

now then – its 5 sleeps till i move back home to NZ. i will probably do a cross stitch update or 2, but other than that, there wont be a lot of posts over the next few weeks while i settle in.

keep warm everyone!.

the next stage has begun…

Standard

Yesterday was my last day of being employed until i can secure a new job!. I am now in the first throws of winding down in the UK, and preparing for my move back to NZ towards the end of the summer here in the northern hemisphere (thereby missing winter in NZ!!!).

I now have to secure some Maternity Nursing work, in order to pay off my debts, be able to afford to ship some of the 10 years worth of treasures i’ve accumulated home, and be able to fly home, rather than walk/swim!.

as i dont have a job to go to yet, and i need a break, i am planning on using these next couple of weeks to get some unfinished projects completed, start sorting and packing some things up, and planning some trips to European capitals, because, for all the years i’ve lived in the UK, i’ve hardly seen anything of Europe!.

I’m hoping to have a few more things for show’n’tell over the next few weeks to liven up this blog!.

right, where to begin……

Greed.

Standard

for a long time now i’ve been making my own food – buying the single components and cooking up a meal, usually in bulk to put additional meals in the freezer. I very rarely buy preprocessed meals because of all the additives they put in the meals to keep them safe in the supermarket. now there is another excellent reason to make my own – the horse meat scandal that is appearing to sweep the country. every few days another revelation is revealed, and lets not forget pork being found in halal food!. all preprocessed food has now got to be tested to ensure it doesn’t contain horse!.

what disgusts me most is the sheer arrogance of some fat cat somewhere who’s being a greedy ‘s.o.b’ and deceiving others by substituting beef for horse and then peddling their product as beef lasagne or hamburger, which are then sold to people looking for food on the cheap.

its time to realise you get what you pay for, that business is not looking after you, the consumer – they are looking after their wallets and the fatter they can stuff them at your expense the better.

I dont know when business stopped being about the product and service and started being about greed, but its ugly!. i should know – i’m just finishing up working for someone with this mentality – money over product!. sadly not enough people feel the way i do, so the adage ‘voting with your wallet’ wont make a significant amount of difference.

its greed that makes me want to be self sufficient, so i’m not feeding the wallet of some a/hole somewhere who’s not concerned about supplying me with a quality product/service – they’re just after increasing their annual bonus!.

hmmm…..i get quite worked up about this topic!. best i stop now!.
